In this article, we have collected and arranged a collection of the most spectacular natural attractions to visit while in the Spa Capital.
Keep in mind that if you want to visit any of the natural sights in Velingrad, it is advisable to bring hiking shoes and other equipment.
If you don't feel like walking deep into the forest, here is our collection of eco-trails that are within walking distance of the city.
The natural phenomenon Slaveevi Rocks
The rock phenomenon Slaveevi Rocks is a rock formation that is orchestrated in the shape of a crown. And indeed it is one of the most beautiful rock phenomena in Velingrad. In fact, numerous objects of cult significance are scattered around the rock itself. The place has been inhabited since Thracian times because there are many Thracian ritual places around the rock complex that is located on Mount Samara.
What makes Slaveevi rocks so special is the panorama towards Velingrad that opens before our eyes!
Kleptuza
Another natural phenomenon is Lake Kleptuza. The lake was the symbol of Velingrad for many years, but unfortunately it is currently in a somewhat neglected state. Its natural beauty was also described by Ivan Vazov in his travelogue "In the bowels of the Rhodopes". There are also remains of a Thracian sanctuary immediately above the lakes. Today, the picturesque chapel "St. Ilia" is located next to the sanctuary above Kleptuza.
The intersection of the 24th meridian and the 42nd parallel - among the most famous natural attractions in Velingrad
Next to Kleptuza is also the intersection of the 24th meridian and the 42nd parallel.
Some people claim that the Thracians knew this, and that is why they chose the Chapel of Saint Elias as their sanctuary.
Ostrets Peak
Ostrets Peak is one of the highest points in the valley. There is a Thracian sanctuary on the ridge, which dates back to the fourth century BC. There are many theories even that it was the long-sought sanctuary of Mount Dionysus. Moreover, there are data from Herodotus about its existence. According to Prof. Diana Gergova, who was the head of the excavations, even Alexander the Great himself used to come here.
From a tourist point of view, Ostrets Peak is a very pleasant eco-trail for a walk. But be warned that the last 1 km is quite steep. You can get there by jeep, bicycle and on foot.
If you have decided to visit on foot, plan the whole day from the morning. Because going to the top is three hours, with time for food, rest and sightseeing and then coming down - it can take you six hours.
The heart of Velingrad is located deep in the forest and if you don't know it and if there is no one to guide you, you probably won't find it, but it is an extremely interesting rock building that is in the shape of a heart and which is very interesting.
